The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board began work with us in 2014, to vision a new elementary school that embraced both innovative, student- centered learning and Catholic values. There also was a need to consolidate three schools, and extensive community engagement with all stakeholders ensured that everyone had a voice from the beginning of the project.

We need to consolidate three schools, and want to see it as an opportunity, not a loss.”

Our inclusive process turned the feelings of “losing” a school into the excitement of creating something new that would positively impact the community at large and create great pride for everyone involved. To do this, students and their learning experiences became the prime consideration, one that influenced every aspect of design and new approaches to teaching.

In the resulting new school, three learning communities support learners in a more personalized environment, where they can explore learning together, in small groups, one-on-one with teachers and individually. Personal choice is emphasized in both learning and the environment. Students choose seating, have opportunities to move and expel energy, can find quieter spaces for contemplation, and can share the expression of their faith in a beautiful, secure and welcoming environment.
