When district staff assessed the needs of the building, it was determined that it made more financial sense to replace the building rather than make significant investments in repairs and maintenance. This allowed the opportunity to create innovative, 21st Century learning spaces that support modern curriculum delivery in a building that is safe, comfortable and energy efficient.
Using the district’s green building principles as a guide, the design team created the school to be built green from the ground up. The position of the new building on the site was carefully studied to take advantage of passive strategies for sustainability, frame views to the mountains, and fit in seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.
We want a sustainable school, and want to rebuild rather than renovate.”
Douglass serves students from the communities of East Boulder County. While the school takes pride in high performance on academics, they believe teaching to the whole child and the development of character are equally important. The new school design is a nurturing environment where students achieve academic excellence, build strong character, engage in arts and athletics, and succeed as thoughtful leaders in the 21st Century.
