Meadowlark PK-8 School is one of four new Net Zero Ready schools in the Boulder Valley School District designed to nurture 21st Century Learning and support the BVSD emerging Innovation Guiding Principles, also facilitated by Fielding International. We served as the design architect for this school that accommodates 700 students ranging from Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. As a Net Zero Ready school, the building will use less than a third of the energy of a typical North American school and can be powered entirely by photovoltaic panels.

We will really need to work closely with the local community and respect their feedback for this project.”

Through an extensive series of community collaborative sessions, the team designed the building around a “Heart” which unifies the five adjacent learning communities and serves as the café, gathering space, and social center of the school. This space is also a place for parents to linger, to gather the whole school for performances and events, and a place to be inspired by the framed view of the Front Rage Mountains.

They have been incredibly responsive to the district and the community’s need throughout the design process. For example, we heard a good deal of concern from our community in Erie at our first of many community meetings about the siting of the building in order to respect neighbor’s views and to minimize traffic issues. The team took the feedback from the community into the next iteration of the design and was able to show the community at the next meeting as to how their voices had impacted the work. The community in the area is very supportive and is genuinely excited about the new school due to the hard work and clear communication provided by the design team.
