Established in 1972, Mount Vernon Presbyterian School, located on 37 acres in the heart of Sandy Springs, serves children ages six weeks through Grade 12. Fielding was hired to provide detailed designs to transform this space on the first floor of one of the elementary school buildings on the Mt. Vernon Campus, so we designed a pilot project that could be completed over the summer of 2013.
We need to create a fast-track innovative pilot project for our youngest students to be done this summer.”
The designs transformed the traditional kindergarten classrooms into to collaborative learning studios by removing one classroom space and converting it into a commons area. Large sliding barn doors connect the adjacent learning studios to the commons, which is outfitted with a small stage area, soft seating, and mobile bookcases for resources. With every furniture piece on wheels, the maximum flexibility is achieved – even the young students can easily rearrange their spaces.
