In a progressive collaboration with YCIS Chongqing, Fielding International has successfully redefined the concept of a learning environment through the planning, design, and construction of this innovative new school. The project began with the development of a comprehensive master plan, aiming to expand the secondary school within the confines of a compact urban site, seamlessly blending local ethos with the best of contemporary design.
Embracing a participatory process to navigate the project’s inherent challenges, our team engaged students, teachers, and leaders in walk-abouts, visioning, and design pattern sessions. These initiatives fostered a shared understanding and measurable objectives, creating a cohesive language across all stakeholders. A continuous cycle of design ideas, prototyping, test fits, and in-depth discussions with leadership, local architects, and engineers ensured a collaborative approach and a school design that truly meets the needs of its users.
The use of a Learning Community model for organization changed the way that teaching and learning occurs, supporting YCIS’s vision to nurture, caring, globally minded leaders.”
To address the unique structural constraints of the site, we innovatively utilized concrete to reduce floor heights, maintaining compliance with local height regulations. The Learning Community model, which underpinned our design philosophy, transformed traditional teaching methods and perfectly echoed YCIS’s vision to foster caring, globally-minded leaders.
Utilizing cutting-edge parametric modeling, the team created a responsive exterior design, engaging with surrounding views, sun path, and landscape, thus achieving a perfect synthesis of space and program. This design approach resulted in varying sizes and numbers of openings across the school’s façade, orchestrating a gradual transition in lighting conditions, and ensuring optimal natural light for different spaces within the school.
The project was made successful by our extensive service offerings that encompassed Master Planning and Secondary School Design, including Concept Design, Schematic Design, and Design Development. This integrative, inclusive, and future-forward approach culminated in a stimulating, environmentally adaptive learning environment that YCIS Chongqing is proud to call their own.
