Janet has always been passionate about how to design the best educational experiences. From crawling inside an abandoned wolf den with high schoolers in Yellowstone National Park to learn about keystone species, to joining a New Orleans second-line parade with middle schoolers to experience the power of community and resiliency, Janet believes in the power of place to catapult learning. Janet’s experience with place-based pedagogy, project-based learning, and experiential education informs her approach to design and facilitation. She believes that the environments and spaces that we teach in have a profound impact on learning. When helping schools design their future vision of teaching and learning, Janet believes listening, questioning, and engaging people in the process is the key to success.

Before coming to Fielding International, Janet worked in PreK-12 schools and museums. Most recently she worked at Live It Learn It, an organization focused on implementing experiential education for Washington DC title I public elementary schools. She served in many roles including lead of the curriculum team, partner liaison, and experiential educator. Prior to that, she spent 5 years at The Howard Gardner School, a progressive high school in Alexandria, VA, as Director of Athletics and science teacher. Janet also spent time in Denver, CO, as an Environmental Education Teacher and Field Trip Coordinator writing and implementing curriculum and crafting multi-week educational experiences around the country for students. Janet has served as Education Director for The Nature Museum in Grafton, VT, and the After School Program Director for Wardsboro Elementary School in Wardsboro, VT.

Janet is a Graduate of the Teton Science Schools Graduate Program in Jackson, WY, and earned her Master of Science in Environmental Science with a concentration in Environmental Education from Antioch University New England. Janet has trained in Project Zero with a focus on the maker movement. She serves on the board of directors at Takoma Park Cooperative Nursery School as the Programs Director. Janet’s favorite way to spend her free time is getting muddy in her native garden with her family and large dog.
